Prior to joining the Beastie Boys,
Amery was best known for his work with the band Suicidal
Tendencies. However, most people's first recollection of
AWOL was in 1994 when he slid behind the drum set during
the Beastie Boys appearance (wearing a Gark Studio T-shirt)
on Saturday Night Live.
Amery plays the drums for the Beastie
Boys whenever Mike D is required
to do the vocals of a hardcore song. If you look closely
at the back of the Aglio
E Olio album, you see Amery pictured and also listed
in the credits.
Most recently many Beastie Boys fans
have been able to meet AWOL up close during one of the 2001
BS 2000 concert performances. Amery along with Adam
Horovitz founded BS 2000. They decided to tour following
the release of their second album Simply Mortified.
While on tour they stopped at both large and small radio
stations to play 45 rpm records and talk about what makes
BS 2000 different than other bands.
