Jane Scarpantoni

The song "I Don't Know", which appears on Hello Nasty, was perhaps the most different sounding Beastie Boys song on the album. Other songs on the record had elements that were familiar to previous releases. For "I Don't Know", the band called upon several artists to lend their talents in the creation of the track. Among those artists, Jane Scarpantoni may be the only one with past experience working with "alternative" rockers.

Jane Scarpantoni is a classically trained cello player. Prior to joining Hoboken, New Jersey's Tiny Lights in the mid-'80s, she'd never been much of a fan of rock-n-roll. Her unique style of playing with Tiny Lights was so impressive that she soon left to play with other musicians. She's played with a who's who of alternative music: Richard Barone (ex-Bongos), the Bob Mould Band, Throwing Muses, R.E.M., Indigo Girls, 10,000 Maniacs, Sheryl Crow as well as many others. At cdnow.com there are over seventy-five listings for albums that she has in one way or another been involved with.

Her work on Hello Nasty may not garner the same attention as some of the other guest performers on the album, but it should not be overlooked in any way, shape or form. Her input into the finished product is what makes "I Don't Know" one of the most memorable songs off of Hello Nasty. Think back to when the the album first was released in July of 1998...one of the things that nearly every published album review had in common was a mention of this track. One can only speculate in terms of "what ifs", but it is sometimes fun to imagine different albums track having been selected to be made into music videos and promoted as the "hit" single. Can you imagine "I Don't Know" replacing "Intergalactic" or "Body Movin'?.
