The Grunge Movement of 1990s put
Seattle, WA on the map for many of us that had not previously
given the Northwest much thought. Whether we realized it
or not, Seattle has always had its heart in the hip-hop
culture. A world away from New York, legends like Sir Mix-a-Lot
paid their dues in some of Seattle's smaller venues just
as up-and-comers like Kirk Dubb and Dynomite
D are doing tape. It is from this hip-hop heart, that
entrepreneur Concave Dave fits into the mix.
Dave is probably best known for selling
one shirt in particular...the Golf Thrills at Gulf Hills
jersey. It has been a fan favorite ever since Mike
D wore it in the "Sure Shot" music video back
in 1994. With little to no advertising, Concave Dave still
moves many of these through his listings on eBay.com. Perhaps
it is the fact that fans know they are getting the jersey
from the same guy Mike D did, that fuels this fire.
Dave met up with the Beastie Boys in the early nineties
when he operated Seattle's X-Large Store. The store at that time not only
carried the clothing items manufactured by X-Large but also stocked
vintage apparel. A previously owned IZOD shirt, for example, would be cleaned
and prepared for resale. Part of the preparation process included affixing
the store's "X-New" tag inside of the garment. For many customers,
it gave them the chance to dress in retro cool fashions in a manner similar
to that of the Beastie Boys.
It is a shame that Seattle's X-Large Store closed down
its operation. The current backlash against flannel is redemptive though. Since
the store's closing, Dave has become a real force in the online auction
business. He has held auctions for items ranging in size and value from t-shirts
to a Porsche 911. A while back, Concave Dave gained media attention over
his attempts to sell Jimi Hendrix's childhood home. Despite the fact that
he's not from "money makin' Manhattan," Concave Dave has proven
that he is able to make his investments flourish...maybe that is the reason Michael
Diamond saw him as a kindred soul.
