Dale Anderson:
There’s no such thing as being indifferent to the Beastie Boys.
You either love them or hate them. Love them for the liberating obnoxiousness of their attitude — “Some voices got treble, some voices got bass,” they chant, “we got the voices that are in your face.” Hate them for the dumb, obstreperous sameness of their rap music. Love them for puncturing sacred cows and defying taboos — their current road trip is called the “Safe Sex Tour” and boxes of rainbow-colored condoms are part of the contractually-stipulated backstage gear. Hate them for their Three Stooges trashiness and their total lack of social graces. Love them for doing a version of the Beatles’ “I’m Down” so rude that Michael Jackson, who holds the copyright on the tune, won’t let them record it. Hate them for being three white gifted-school punks from Queens who rip off a black up-from-the-streets musical form and exploit it all the way to the top of the charts. Love them for giving voice to the spirit of youthful rebellion. Hate them for the example they set for American youth. No matter what the verdict, there’s one thing that’s certain. When they come to the Alumni Arena on UB’s Amherst Campus Saturday night, it won’t be dull.
